Update on Rainforest Action Network’s Palm Oil campaign
Ethical brands Whole Foods Market, Body Shop and Ben & Jerry’s are
under fire from the Rainforest Action Network for their sourcing of
palm oil. The eco-friendly food companies have refused to sign a
pledge, devised by the campaigner, to call for a moratorium on the
expansion of palm oil plantations in tropical forests. RAN says it is
“extremely disappointed” that the three brands have not joined 31
other food, cosmetics and consumer goods companies in signing the
pledge. It wants the three to do more than simply support the
industry-sponsored group, the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil, to
halt rainforest destruction by palm oil plantations in Indonesia,
Malaysia and elsewhere. RAN and other palm oil campaigners such as
Greenpeace question the effectiveness of the RSPO. Upcoming Ethical
