Washington: Last Honorable Boy Scout leader speaks out against executive scout corruption
As one of the million adult volunteers who make scouting work at the troop level, the vast majority of us don’t even know our overpaid executives. We are the parents and adults who organize the weekly troop meetings, coordinate our extensive public service efforts, arrange monthly campouts and nudge these boys on what good citizenship really means. As an Eagle Scout, and Scoutmaster to 16 great kids here in the Seattle area, the recent Seattle P-I investigative series on scouting was the P-I at its best; a legacy of responsible journalism, asking difficult questions, and pushing us all to expect more from ourselves and our institutions.

Our scouts know how to keep you from bleeding to death in a car accident. They know how to safely rescue a drowning victim. They can start a fire with one match and then cook a spectacular meal on it. They will always be the person on a group hike who will have a compass, a first aid kit and an extra sweater. We have produced 16 Eagle Scouts in the recent years.
Our Eagle Scout projects reach from West Seattle to Normandy Park. We have built trails, made church signs and completed gardens at retirement homes. Each project has more than 100 hours of volunteer service, and our Eagle Scout projects have added more than $100,000 in public benefit to our community — all completed by scouts and our adult volunteers.
So, as a postscript to the P-I’s good work, scouting is about preparing these boys for a life centered on serving others, while building a profound appreciation for the natural world. Clearly, as the P-I pointed out, scouting has some work to do to rebuild the public trust. But we must not lose sight of the unpaid work done every day by scouting, to make this a better world, a better country and a better community. –Mark L. Ufkes is a Scoutmaster for Troop 375 in White Center
