Australia: Weld Valley defenders set up new camp to stop planned logging road

Forest activists have opened a camp in the Weld Valley in southern Tasmania, vowing to take whatever action is necessary to protect the area from a planned logging road. The Huon Valley Environment Centre says it’s built a tree sit at the camp to monitor the progress of a Forestry Tasmania road that may be extended over the Weld River.

Spokeswoman Jenny Weber said surveys and research can be conducted
from the camp, but it could have other uses if work on the road goes
ahead. “We’ve got this watchtower to look out for the wedge tailed
eagles that we’ve seen many times and we’ll be looking out over the
north Weld wilderness,” Ms Weber said.

“The Huon Valley Environment Centre commits to doing everything that’s necessary to bring to attention if this road’s going ahead,” she said.
