Friends of the Earth Report on forests and Climate
Dear friends, Below are links to a new Friends of the Earth
International report (in English, French and Spanish) on the
scientific links between forests and climate change. To my knowledge
it is the only report that brings together the enormous wealth of
research on how forests regulate the climate and the climate affects
forests. It also serves as a call to action to keep fossil fuels in
the ground, address the drivers of deforestation by slashing
consumption, end trade and investment liberalisation that fuel
deforestation, reject monoculture tree plantations and recognise land
rights among other preliminary demands to ramp up the pressure on
governments on both climate and forest-related decision making.

I also include links to the our REDD (Reducing Emission from
Deforestation In Developing Countries) report that was launching in
Poznan where we saw language on Indigenous Peoples and local
communities’ rights removed, no clear definition of forests and
language on “forest carbon stocks” opening the door for REDD financing
for monoculture tree plantations and (even though it didn’t get any
play in Poznan) almost all of REDD proposals on the table are still
pro-forest carbon offsets.
