Texas: Stop Border Patrol from using aerial spraying to kill all vegetation along Mexican border
Laredo TX city council voted to allow the Border Patrol to aerially spray the US-Mexico border with the toxic herbicide Imazapyr, a substance which begins to kill all vegetation immediately upon application. Many residents at the meeting opposed this move, citing the environmental impact and potential health side effects, as well as the likelihood that the chemical could contaminate the water supply for Nuevo Laredo, their Mexican sister-city.

The accompanying photo (above) shows the effects of an aerial spray conducted six months prior on a test site near Laredo. Federal officials considered the results “successful” in efforts to eradicate the invasive plant carrizo; however, the site now slated for defoliation contains 1000 living species, including four endangered species.
This photo was taken on the Zachary Ranch in March 2008 by Dr. Jim Earhart of the Rio Grande International Study Center. Local activist Jay J. Johnson-Castro Sr. of the Rio Grande International Study Center stated in a telephone interview that federal agents intend to eventually spray the extensive border river area, from Big Bend to Brownsville Texas.
“Why would they make the initial spray in a populated area?” he queried. Clearing 1.1 miles of border between the cities of Laredo and Nuevo Laredo will cost $2 Million.

Va EU por la revancha, insiste en rociar herbicida en el río

NUEVO LAREDO, 11/04/09.- Mediante una segunda reunión convocada esta vez por la Comisión Internacional de Límites y Aguas (CILA), se tratará de convencer a autoridades mexicanas de que la aplicación del herbicida “Imazapyr” en las vegas del río Bravo no es peligroso para la salud.
Será en la reunión binacional a celebrarse en Ciudad Juárez el próximo día 20 de Abril, donde se reciba el estudio elaborado por autoridades de Estados Unidos con la finalidad de convencer que no es dañino, expuso Carlos Montiel Saeb.
El gerente general de la Comisión Municipal de Agua Potable y Alcantarillado (Comapa), dijo que recibió por parte de la CILA un estudio elaborado por las autoridades norteamericanas donde se especifica que el herbicida no ocasiona riesgo.
El 20 de Marzo, la Border Patrol tenía prevista la derrama del químico en las orillas de río con la finalidad de limpiar la ribera para ejercer una mayor vigilancia, sin embargo fue suspendido debido a la protestas que generó.
Así también un grupo ambientalista, había alertado sobre los estragos ocasionados al río y sus alrededores durante la prueba realizada, apenas unos kilómetros delante de Laredo, Texas.
“Precisamente la CILA nos envió este documento, el cual nuestros químicos analizarán para hacer las observaciones pertinentes. Así mismo el llamado para acudir a la Segunda Reunión Binacional en Ciudad Juárez, donde se hablará sobre este tema específicamente”, expresó Montiel Saeb.
La reunión se efectuará el próximo 20 de abril, y es ahí donde las autoridades mexicanas expondrán sus observaciones sobre este estudio que muestra un Manual y Ficha Técnica del Contenido del Herbicida, además de información sobre el impacto ambientalista de químicos como el ‘Imazapyr’.
Puntualizó que en la primera reunión que se celebró entre autoridades mexicanas y estadounidenses, se suspendió la aplicación del químico y se busca que sea definitiva esta acción por parte de la Patrulla Fronteriza, quienes son los más interesados en vaciar al Río Bravo el herbicida para acabar con el carrizo del caudal.
