Oregon: Summary of State’s Wilderness protections under new bill that just passed

After years of hard work our efforts have finally paid off with the protection of Mount Hood, the Columbia Gorge, Copper Salmon, Soda Mountain, Spring Basin and the Badlands.

Here’s a brief summary of the new protections for Oregon’s natural areas.

  • It’s been 25 years since the last major Wilderness bill in Oregon.
  • Wilderness protection for 202,000 acres (315 sq miles)
  • Protection for 90 miles Wild & Scenic rivers
  • The new protections will save approximately 7 million trees.
  • There are 240 miles of trails now protected in the newly designated areas (includes National Recreation Areas
