Texas: Why George H. Russell quit the Boy Scouts
The Boy Scouts have long been advocates of clearcutting and species
conversion from native mixed forests to monoculture toilet paper farms. I
quit the Boy Scout while working toward becoming an Eagle Scout in about
1957 or ’58.
I loved our native forests and so decided to acquire a Merit Badge in
Forestry. The manual demanded that ancient oaks with 100 foot spreads be
destroyed in order to make room for pine seedlings. The beautiful oak
pictured in the manual was called by the Boy Scouts, a WOLF TREE, something
to be hated and destroyed.
I quit Boy Scouts the moment I read what BSA
believes about destroying native forest ecosystems and have virtually
despised what in my opinion is a neo-fascist right wing racist organization
ever since. If I am wrong then prove it to me and I’ll submit a “mia culpa”.
