California: Irrational unscientific fire plan to lay waste to Chaparral habitat

Friend of the Chaparral – On January 9th San Diego County Planning Commission passed along a vegetation “management” report to the Board of Supervisors despite overwhelming opposition from the public and the fire science community. The report sets the stage for extensive “fuel” treatments in protected wildland areas, actions that will cause significant damage to the natural environment and waste scarce public fire risk reduction dollars.

The Planning Commission’s decision can only be interpreted as a public denouncement of the efforts made by all of those who have endeavored to help the county understand the importance of science and honest collaboration. It is clear now that the county obviously wants no part of it. The county’s dismal 5-year-record of misrepresenting science is documented here: http://www.californiachaparral.org/csdcountyslashburn.html It’s time to change our approach.
