West Virginia: 700 acres protected when state buy development rights

ROMNEY — More than 700 forest acres in Hampshire County will be
preserved for future generations. Monday in Charleston Governor Joe
Manchin and State Forester Randy Dye signed a contract purchasing the
development rights for the state’s first-ever forest legacy property.

The contract ensures the tract of land will remain a forest forever.
“One of West Virginia’s most valuable resources is its forest and with
development – especially in that area from the Washington, D.C. area,
forests are at a threat and we feel it’s important to preserve,” said
WV State Forester Randy Dye. The property owners – Dr. and Mrs.
Timothy Stewart of Romney – donated about a quarter of the funds
necessary to cover the cost.
