Indonesia: Save Meru Betiri National Park
JEMBER: The Jember regency administration has been urged to strengthen
supervision at the Meru Betiri National Park due to increasing illegal
logging activities in the past two years. Sumarsono, a senior staff
member at the national park, said over the weekend that illegal
logging cases rose from 42 in 2007 to 64 this year but no measures had
yet been taken to stop these illegal activities.

He said that so far
no cases had been brought to court. Settlement of such cases would
require all illegal logs to be seized and auctioned to the public.
“The police, the military and the forest rangers should be deployed to
launch a joint operation not only to arrest illegal loggers but to
strengthen supervision in the national park,” he said.
