California: RIP: Wukchumni elder Melba Whitebird

It is with sorrow that we announce that Melba Whitebird, 60, Wukchumni elder and member of the SFK Advisory Board, passed away on Friday, Jan. 9. She was beautiful, intelligent, and talented. I have known Melba and her family since the 1970’s. Her funeral was filled with American Indian ceremony, prayers, and song that she cherished.

Melba was my cousin. I was so proud to have her as my cousin. When we were younger our other cousins Carol, Loretta and Angie always wanted to be like her. We always thought she was so beautiful, which she was. I was so sad when I heard of her passing. I will always remember Melba as this carefree, happy, and so full of life. She had such wisdom and knowledge and she loved her people. I was so proud of all her accomplishments. Melba will be missed. Jeannie, Debbie and Denise I love you girls very much and I hope to see you soon. Love always Jeanette Montoya..
